HBO has a new documentary that sheds light on the national problem of untested sexual assault evidence kits called I Am Evidence. Lexington hosted a special showing of the film on November 30th. In 2015, a statewide audit revealed Kentucky had more than three thousand untested rape kits. The state is just one of many struggling with a backlog, and that’s exactly what I Am Evidence shows.

A new HBO documentary about the national problem of untested sexual assault evidence kits will be shown to an invite-only audience in Lexington, according to the Kentucky Association of Sexual Assault Programs (KASAP). KASAP explains they are hosting the screening as part of the 19th annual Ending Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence conference.
With her work as President of Joyful Heart, Hargitay began to uncover the thousands upon thousands of untested rape kits currently filling up police departments and crime labs in the US. “I Am Evidence” is Hargitay’s effort to expose this negligence on the part of the criminal justice system, and give sexual assault victims a chance to share their stories. The film screening concluded with a panel of regional and national leaders in sexual assault prevention.

The film, “I Am Evidence” was shown in a private screening Monday afternoon at the Kansas Bureau of Investigation’s Forensic Science Center on the campus of Washburn University. The film was viewed by approximately 100 advocates and other professionals committed to improving the response to sexual assault in the state.
